Multicultural Children’s Book Day
Today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD), an annual event that celebrates diversity in children’s books and aims to get diverse books in the hands of young readers. It is so important for children from all backgrounds to see themselves (and others) represented in books from an early age. Fortunately the landscape of children’s literature is evolving and is steadily becoming more diverse and inclusive. Of course, there is still room for improvement.
This is my first year participating as a book reviewer in MCBD. I received When Langston Dances, written by Kaija Langley and illustrated by Keith Mallett. Langley’s picture book debut is about a young boy who loves to dance and wants to start taking ballet lessons. Intent on learning ballet, Langston must get past the general notion that ballet is not for boys. With his mother’s encouragement and his own determination, Langston goes to his first ballet class and dances to his heart’s content. This sweet story can teach children important lessons about courage, self-confidence and perseverance.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 (1/28/22) is in its 9th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission & History HERE.
