Happy Halloween!
I’m excited to participate in my first Halloweensie Writing Contest this year. The challenge is to write a child-appropriate Halloween story in 100 words or fewer. Some form of “glow-in-the-dark,” “goosebump” and “goodies” must appear in the story. Many thanks to children’s author Susanna Leonard Hill for organizing.
Great-Aunt Broomhilda
My great-aunt Broomhilda’s a sight to behold.
She’s turning one-hundred next year.
Her scratchety voice and her clackety teeth
leave me shrieking and shaking with fear.
This Halloween, I had ghoulish ideas
to goosebumpify Mulberry Street.
Cute costumed children who knocked on my door
were presented a devilish treat.
Broomhilda appeared in a flowing black cape
and a glow-in-the-dark pointy hat.
She snarled and cackled, waggled her claws
and hiss-hissed like a rabid stray cat.
Frazzled and frightened, screaming in shock,
the revelers scrambled to flee.
Thank you, Broomhilda, for making my night.
These goodies can all be for me!
